Spanish cannabis social clubs (coffeeshops) appeared because of the law allowing the consumption of marijuana in private places.
About 800 cannabis clubs in Spain operate as private organizations.
Hemp plants grow on-site, and club members pay a fee and have access to weed, which is legal and controlled. Club members have the right to choose the variety of plants grown, as well as manage the activities of the club. You may not buy cannabis in social clubs, but you can make a donation, and use some amount of weed inside the club.
Members have several benefits in social cannabis clubs. First, they are confident in the quality of weed, as opposed to black-market marijuana. Second, they get cannabis at a lower cost.
Each social club has its own rules:
- Registration. Obligatory registration in the regional register of associations is provided.
- Harm reduction. Members should strive to reduce any harm associated with the supply and consumption of cannabis.
- Closed to the public. No strangers, only members of the club and by invitation from other members of the club. There are exceptions for people with a medical certificate stating that they can benefit from cannabis for medical purposes.
- Restrictions. Compliance with conditions to prevent members from selling cannabis on the black bourse.
- Immediate consumption. Use THC products on the spot, in small quantities, it is allowed to take it along.
- Non-profit. Payment of production and management costs only. All proceeds go back to the club.
