A cannabis extract refers particularly to a specific type of concentrate. The extracts are generally created with the help of solvents and usually need the help of specific equipment to achieve the desired result. Cannabis extracts are significantly more potent than dried plants. Its medicinal applications have proven to be effective for patients with various ailments. When done correctly, a marijuana concentrate is an enhancement of the cannabis strain that was extracted. This means that the smell, taste, and effects are magnified simply because we are obtaining the pure substance.
BHO (butane hash oil)
The extraction of marijuana resin with butane gas is a popular concentrate of cannabis. Depending on the type of extraction, we can find it in different consistencies, ranging from a soft paste to a hard biscuit. Products containing up to 90 percent of THC may be obtained. This extraction technique has many advantages over others, but it has its downside too. Producing it is a risky process. So when using instruments that can catch fire or explode, it is advisable to have some experience in it. Depending on how the extract is processed, it can be transformed into a variety of product forms (wax, shatter, budder, crumble, etc).
Wax
Wax is obtained using butane (liquefied gas) as a solvent, the same as BHO extractions. In fact, it is a type of BHO and its appearance and characteristics vary depending on the manufacturing process. This extract contains a high concentration of cannabinoids and terpenes with an opaque and creamy texture, very similar to beeswax.
Shatter
Shatter differs from other cannabis extracts because it is crystallized, lipid-free, and created from dried or cured marijuana. It is more potent due to its purity. It is a very stable extract with a high concentration of THC. But with fewer terpenes than other waxy extractions such as live resin. It looks like a thin, golden leaf. Shatter is also a type of BHO.
Crumble
Crumble is a marijuana extract that is formed from a particular purgation of the BHO. It is very similar to the Shatter but created with less heat and more time in a vacuum. Crumble is an extract that retains more terpenes and cannabinoids than the rest since trichomes are lost as the temperature rises. It reduces the flavor, aroma, and potency of the product. Therefore, the organoleptic qualities of this weed extract are amazing. However, the plant material used in the creation process influences the final result. There are two types of Crumble according to their texture, which depends on the material used to create it: Wax Crumble and Sugar Crumble.
Badder (budder, batter)
Badder, budder, and batter are synonyms for the same cannabis extract. This concentrate is usually obtained through butane extraction so it’s a type of BHO. It can also be obtained with CO₂, which supposedly leads to a more pure final product. After extraction, the badder is going through a special purging process which gives it its typical thick and creamy texture, very similar to that of butter (“budder”-“butter”).
Honeycomb
Honeycomb is a BHO that is very similar in shape to a beehive. This extract is purged at around 55-60ºC and is at least 50% decarboxylated before going through the vacuum pump at 25 hg. Unlike some other cannabis extracts, the honeycomb is manufactured using a solvent to extract the compounds from the flowers, or else its distinctive texture could not be produced.
Sugar
Sugar (sometimes it is called “sugar wax”) is a type of marihuana extract (BHO) with a moist sugar consistency. It is made of dried cannabis flowers or frozen plants. Sugar practically always has a yellow or amber color. Due to their crystalline consistency, sugars have a tendency to retain flavor and are known to have amazing terpene profiles and flavors.
Live Resin
This extraction starts from raw fresh cannabis plants, which are frozen to retain a greater amount of monoterpenes before passing the hydrocarbons through the biomass. Live resin has a more waxy and shiny appearance than other extractions. It has an organoleptic profile very similar to a living plant. It captures those aromas in the extractions that quickly degrade in the drying and curing of hemp. So the final product is totally different from what we are used to with other extraction methods.
THC Distillate
THC distillate refers to distilled crude oil. Using fractional distillation, cannabinoids are isolated from other compounds in the oil to create a scentless and tasteless concentrate. Further, it can be processed and refined into a variety of consumer products.
CBD Distillate
It is purified hemp crude oil through fractional distillation. Its oily texture is odorless and tasteless. It can be transformed into an array of other consumer products. The CBD distillate shall not be regarded as a full-spectrum extract due to the elimination of other cannabinoids during the distilling process.
Cannabis extracts are getting more and more popular. Smokers are looking for new experiences and ways to consume weed. When we talk about extracts we mean better and more diverse results. There is definitely already an extract with the effect that you are looking for.
